Somewhere, hidden right here in Irithyll, is a deep dungeon. And even below that, the Profaned Capital. Home of Yhorm, the reclusive giant lord. That reminds me, I've a grave promise to keep... Oh, sorry, I'm afraid I've cast a cloud over things.
~ Siegward of Catarina, in Irithyll Kitchen

Yhorm the Giant is one of the major antagonists in Dark Souls 3. He was one of the Lords of Cinder as well as a ruler of Profaned Capital and a friend of Siegward of Catarina. He wanted to protect his kingdom by choosing to link the first flame. Unfortunately, the kingdom he sought to protect struck by an unknown calamity by the Profaned Flame he sought to put to rest. Before that, he gave a Storm Ruler to Siegward for put him out of his own misery should he reawakened as a Lord of Cinder.

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

  • Yhorm's Greatsword and Greatshield are the only usable equipment for the players. Yhorm's armor set are unusable equipment for players, however.
  • Yhorm's origins were up to player's speculation because there are theories surrounding him that he's descended from Wolnir's bloodline and his distant connections to the Giants from the first and second games, by their character designs. Yhorm, along with his enslaved brethren, were one of the known surviving giants in Dark Souls 3.
    • There is a theory that Wolnir might be a giant before was consumed by the Abyss.
  • Yhorm, being a gentle giant with a fearsome facade, is known to be friends with Siegward of Catarina, who is implied to be a distant descendant of Sieglinde, Siegmeyer's daughter. In which, Siegward is a very jovial onion knight, or we called him, "OnionBro", like his predecessor.
    • Should the player progress Siegward's questline into the Irithyll Dungeon, Siegward will fulfill his promise to put his old friend down to rest.
  • Yhorm's rule is not as mighty as Gwyn's but still met with a tragedy when he's determined to protect the kingdom despite the people's discrimination of the giants (Except Siegward, who is a very jovial man) to put the Profaned Flame to rest. However, after Yhorm linked the first flame, His kingdom was strucked by the rain of fireballs from the sky of Profaned Flame. To rub salt in the wound, Yhorm still hasn't got respect from his people despite being the ruler as if his attempts to put the Profaned Flame out is all for nothing.
  • Yhorm's Boss fight is overall one of the known puzzle bosses that was a Fromsoftware's myth gag to Storm King from Demon Souls. As Storm Ruler sword is the only weapon that can inflict severe damage to the boss. If you're going to beat him without a weapon, it's up to you to proceed, have fun depleting his enormous health bar by striking his leggings (If you have an electromancy spell).
  • Depending on whom the player kills last, whether Aldrich or Yhorm, you'll be transported back to Emma's room, which was the Boss Arena of the Dancer of Boreal Valley.
  • The art, Yhorm vs Ashen One, known as Man vs Giant, created by a Pixiv Artist, Tatsuya, generates the amounts of memes of a man overcoming the great challenge.

Trivia[]

  • Yhorm the Giant, the Abyss Watchers, Ludleth, Pontiff Sulyvahn, Dancer of Boreal Valley, & Siegward of Catarina are the Ensemble Dark Horses from the base game of Dark Souls 3.
  • Yhorm's backstory ironically mirrors The Witch of Izalith from the first game who is known as The Bed of Chaos, which considered as one of the worst Dark Souls bosses ever made.
