W. D. Gaster is the former royal scientist who eventually was replaced by Alphys. He is an extremely enigmatic scientist who had invented the CORE, and was said to have fallen in it and shattered across time and space.
What Make Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- The mystery behind his character tends to be very intriguing for much of the fans. Due to his deliberately enigmatic characterization, with not much being known beyond him being the former royal scientist, inventing the CORE, and having followers, he has many different interpretations, and as a result he ended up having a massive fanbase and appeared in many AUs despite the fact he barely has a role in Undertale which is only seen if you have certain fun values, and a possible role in Deltarune.
- His theme, which can be heard if you have a fun value of 65, is a unsettling yet popular theme with the fanbase and has received many remixes over the years.
- His stats in Undertale's files imply he was extremely powerful, as he has extremely high stats in all areas, and all of which are made of the number six. This is further supported by the fact that in the fight against Sans, he uses something known as Gaster Blasters, an extremely powerful weapon which can easily tear through your health bar and is one of the main reasons his fight is so infamously difficult.
- The Gaster Blasters being used by Sans implies he may have possibly had some relations with Gaster, further intriguing the fans and has led to various fan theories, most famously the possibility of Sans and Papyrus being Gaster's children.
- There's certain things in Deltarune he's suspected to be the one interacting with the player/Kris in, such as when choosing a character and name before being told it doesn't matter, or when being given eggs when certain circumstances are met.
