Cai, commonly referred to as the Cabbage Merchant, is a background character in the Nickelodeon TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is an incompetent cabbage merchant in the Earth Kingdom who tries to sell his cabbages, but his cart keeps getting destroyed.
He is voiced by James Sie.
What Makes Him An Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- To get the elephant out of the room, he became popular due to how comedic he is. Whenever someone destroys his humungous cart of cabbages, he iconically screams "My cabbages!". In fact, he became a meme due to how fans found him funny.
- He is an extremely minor character who mainly serves as a filler/background character. This made his reception even more ironic with him having a very flat and one-dimensional personality.
- His constant misfortunes throughout The Last Airbender make him sympathetic, making it satisfying for him to get a happy ending where he founds Cabbage Corp which becomes a successful business, and he even gets his own statue.
- His popularity influenced his appearance in the Netflix adaptation with James Sie reprising his role, and the book Avatar: The Last Airbender: My Cabbages! depicting events from his perspective.
