~ Stu gleefully expressing his desire to go on a second killing spree. |
Stuart "Stu" Macher is a major antagonist of the Scream franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist of the first film and will return in some capacity in the upcoming Scream 7.
He was portrayed by Matthew Lillard. While disguising his voice, he was voiced by Roger L. Jackson, who also voiced Hol Horse in the OVA adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. For his in-costume scenes as Ghostface, he was portrayed by Lee Waddell, Dane Farwell, Tony Cecere, and Skeet Ulrich.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- Even though he only appears in the first film, many Scream fans consider Stu to be one of the best Ghostfaces in the franchise due to Matthew Lillard's performance.
- Although he is considered the secondary antagonist and Billy's sidekick, Stu is often viewed as the more evil of the duo due to the brutality of his kills, and his lack of a tragedy or Freudian Excuse like Billy's.
- Stu can be considered a prime example of Billy's statement about the lack of a motive making villains a lot scarier, seeing as his peer pressure was a flimsy excuse and he appeared to be genuinely crazy, thus making him stand out from other Ghostface killers who had elaborate motives and grand schemes. This makes him Stu even more terrifying as it places him closer to real-life psychopaths despite the fact that he's actually psychotic.
- Many of Stu's lines, including his line about sequels, are among the most iconic lines in the entire franchise.
- Some of these lines were improvised by Matthew Lillard, such as his reaction when Billy hits him with the phone as Skeet Ulrich accidentally hit him for real during the shooting.
- He has one of the most memorable deaths for a Ghostface killer in the franchise, getting his head brutally smashed by Sidney with a TV screen. This can be considered symbolic of how his obsession with horror films and TV culture shaped his mind and sealed his fate.
- Though his character was dead, Matthew Lillard went on to make a background cameo in Scream 2 as an Easter Egg for the fans.
- Due to Matthew Lillard's rise in popularity and meme status from playing Shaggy Rogers in the Scooby-Doo franchise, a lot of fans revisit his role of Stu with different eyes, seeing it as a great flex in terms of acting that proved he could play a horror villain just as fine as his comedic roles. It also made fans more excited about his role in the Five Nights at Freddy's film where he plays William Afton.
- Alongside that, fans agree that he helps make the film scarier without being unlikable, as he is considered too entertaining and Laughably Evil to be a full on Hate Sink.
Trivia[]
- While Stu is currently an Ensemble Dark Horse, there's a slight chance that his status could be affected in the upcoming Scream 7, as Matthew Lillard was confirmed to be reprising his role in the film (though hopefully not we don't want another Lewis Dodgeson).
- So far he's the only Ensemble Dark Horse in the franchise to be a villain.
