Sage (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Sage is a minor character in the third SpongeBob theatrical film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Sage is a benevolent spirit and a Dream Weaver, capable of astral projection, who manifests as a seaweed with a human face and gives guidance to travelers in need. He assists SpongeBob and Patrick in their quest to rescue Gary from Poseidon.

He was played by Keanu Reeves.

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

Before the film was even released, the casting of Keanu Reeves was met with critical acclaim and positive comments from fans, who were hyped due to his increasing popularity in recent years and thankful to have him as a guest in the SpongeBob franchise.
Fans were even happier to see he wouldn't be simply voice-acting but also physically portraying Sage with his own likeness, following the tradition of live-action guest stars in previous SpongeBob films like David Hasselhoff and Antonio Banderas.
He was liked for his zen attitude and meditational undertones, providing valuable assistance to SpongeBob and Patrick on the topic of astral projection.
Despite being taken more seriously than other allies across the series, Sage still had plenty of comedic exchanges with SpongeBob and Patrick, such as his explanation for his own name's meaning or him getting mad at the duo for not taking his instructions seriously.
He serves as a foil to El Diablo, being a messianic figure on the side of good who helps SpongeBob out of the goodness of his heart, while El Diablo was clearly meant to be something akin to the Devil in the SpongeBob universe, keeping the souls of the damned locked up in a hell of his own design.
He is a pretty heroic character, not only helping SpongeBob in his quest but also tasking him with releasing the souls owned by El Diablo from a fate worse than death.
