The Pied Piper is a supporting antagonist of DreamWorks' 20th full-length animated feature film Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment of the Shrek film series.
Based on the character of the same name from the children's book, the Piper is a professional mercenary specialized in a magical flute hired by Rumpelstiltskin to aid in his scheme to capture all the ogres who oppose him. He can control living beings against their will with the power of his flute.
Though the character is mute, he is nonetheless portrayed by the late flutist Jeremy Steig.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- With the little screentime he was given, he proves to be a Magnificent Baddie with a unique screen presence compared to other villains in the series.
- Many fans regard the character as having played the strong silent type role to perfection, as he is a mysterious and enigmatic mercenary who communicates through his actions rather than words, making him an instantly captivating character to the audience.
- He has a cool design and an epic introduction where he forces Rumpel's army of witches to dance against their will, effectively cementing him as a badass.
- He has an awesome weapon of choice in the form of his magical flute, inspired by the book he originates from, only that instead of only controlling rats this version can seize control of pretty much any living beings that he sets it to.
- As a mercenary he is highly competent and resourceful, having managed to capture most of the ogres that Rumple sent him after, with Shrek and Fiona only escaping him through opportunistic luck due to outside intervention and his flute's limitation of only controlling one species at a time.
