Pauline is a character who made her debut in both the Super Mario and Donkey Kong franchises in the 1981 game Donkey Kong.
What Makes Her an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- Even though she only appeared a few times prior to Super Mario Odyssey, Pauline always had a sizeable fanbase who hoped she would appear in future Mario games, such as Mario Kart.
- When Pauline made her re-appearance in Super Mario Odyssey, not only did her previous fans rejoice at her return, but she also got several new fans who loved her character development, going from a damsel in distress to the mayor of New Donk City.
- In addition to her character development, many people also grew to love Pauline because of her sense of fashion (going between her usual dress and a mayoral pantsuit) and her singing voice.
- When Pauline didn't appear in the first trailer in Super Mario Party Jambaree, fans were concerned that she would end up a wasted opportunity to have her first appearance in a Mario Party game, but after the next trailer which reveals her to be a playable (albeit unlockable) character, fans were overjoyed to see her included in the game.
Trivia[]
- As a result of Pauline's popularity in Super Mario Odyssey, she gradually began to appear as a playable character in several Mario spin-off games, including Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart Tour (before becoming part of the Booster Course Pass in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Super Mario Party Jamboree.
