N is for Neville who died of ennui.
~ The text accompanying Neville's panel.

Neville is one of the twenty-six children from the Edward Gorey book The Gashlycrumb Tinies.

In the book, the deaths of all twenty-six children, each named after a letter in the English alphabet, are told in 13 couplets in rhyme. Naturally, as a result of the book being nothing more than a morbid poem, none of the children have a discernable personality.

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

  • The character had only ever appeared on a single page of his debut book, and hasn't appeared in another work created by Edward Gorey since then.
  • Like all of the children in the book, Neville doesn't have much of a disernable personality, only be used as a punchline in the book he originates from.
  • Many fans of this book consider Neville's death amongst one of the most unique, and perhaps the most ironic, literally dying of boredom. This is in comparison to many of the other children's more mundane deaths (Falling down stairs, being done in by a thug, choking on a peach, etc.). Some fans even find this death to be somewhat relatable, being an exaggeration of the term "dying of boredom".
  • Some have interpretted Neville's death to actually be him comitting suicide out of depression. If this is the case, his death can be considered one of the darker ones in the book.
  • The character's death is often treated as a meme amongst Edward Gorey fans, again due to its outlandish nature compared to many of the other children's more mundane deaths.
