Mozenrath

Mozenrath is the secondary antagonist of Disney's Aladdin franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the Aladdin television series.

He is an immensely powerful teenage sorcerer who rules a dark kingdom, the Land of the Black Sand, and strives to take over the world, only to be opposed by Aladdin.

He was voiced by the late Jonathan Brandis, while Jeff Bennett voiced him in "Black Sand".

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

In the cartoon, Mozenrath didn't initially start as the show's main antagonist, a role taken instead by Abis Mal, and had only appeared in 9 of the show's 86 episodes. Despite this, he is considered the most iconic and memorable villain in the whole show, to the point where he was promoted to the show's Big Bad by its third season.
One major aspect that played into his popularity was how he was the most threatening and competent villain in the entire show. Any time an episode centers around him, he is always very close to succeeding with his plans, often some of the most serious moments in the entire franchise, but is otherwise defeated just in time.
- He is an effective strategist, taking full advantage of his adversaries, and one of the few that learns from his past mistakes. On several ocassions, he was able to make Aladdin do exactly what he wants him to, being able to manipulate him more effectively when he learns of his selflessness.
- He was able to take the throne of his master Destane, turning him into one of his undead henchmen. Adding onto this is how Destane is stated to have even frightened Jafar, the franchise's Big Bad.
- He infamously attempted to release the Wind Jackal to annihilate Agrabah, and threatened to do the same to every other kingdom in the world that doesn't oblidge to him. In the same episode, he dominates the entire Sprite race, working them to near death and killing any of them that try to rebel.
- He traps a large portion of the Sultan's palace in an alternate dimesnion.
- He was even able to overtake the all-powerful Genie. He successfully captures Genie in a crystal prison, and uses his magic against the heroes, in one episode. In another, he takes Genie and Eden, turning them into living batteries.
- In his last appearance, he switches bodies with Aladdin, leaving Aladdin in his dying body.
Fans often consider him to be the perfect foil to Aladdin, both being young, resourceful tricksters that use their wits to accomplish their goals, though the similarities end there. Otherwise, he is considered Aladdin's opposite, being a pale, physically frail, malicious aristocrat, in stark contrast of Aladdin being a tanned, athletic, gentle former begger.
- This is even highlighted in the show several times, with Mozenrath disliking Aladdin simply because he chooses to help others over his own personal benefit, and even uses this fact to his advantage when going against him.
His slender face, tall figure, curly hair, lean figure, and pouty lips, and his generally charismatic attitude can be considered attractive to some fans.
He is so well liked fans want him to appear as a boss in a Kingdom Hearts title.

Trivia[]

Adding onto his ensemble dark horse status, fans often want it to be canon that Mozenrath is somehow related to Aladdin, due to their similar appearances, and otherwise opposite personalities. After a rumor stating that Mozenrath would have appeared as the main antagonist of Aladdin and the King of Thieves had spread, it had also become a rumor that that movie would have revealed they were related.
