~ Midra, prior becoming the Lord of Frenzied Flame |
Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame is a minor antagonist in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. He is one of the optional superbosses that The Tarnished encounters in his Manse in Abyssal Woods. He is one of the Tarnished, as well as one of the known Lords of Frenzied Flame, before Lord Vyke, & Hyetta.
He's voiced by Connor Byrne, who also voiced Father Gascoigne in Bloodborne.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- His relationship with Nanaya is up to player's interpretations, as many implies that Nanaya was an innocent victim of Hornsent's policy or a manipulative lover for Midra. Nevertheless, he was fated to be Maidenless and his last words were asking forgiveness to Nanaya before becoming Lord of Frenzied Flame.
- Midra, like any other Lords of Frenzied Flame, is FromSoftware's answer to the Lovecraftian Horror character, Hastur, AKA The King in Yellow, which is created by Robert W. Chambers.
- Midra is maybe the very first person to become the Lord of Frenzied Flame, as a punishment, he got impaled by a greatsword of damnation by the Hornsent tribe, in which said greatsword used to limit his profaned sorcerous powers. It looks like he's one easy target for The Tarnished to loot Runes. Except, he turns out to be a boss as he removes his greatsword from his head, decapitating him, becoming a Lord of Frenzied Flame that could end the world. This is a subtle reminder that the cult of Lord of Frenzied Flame had existed before the Era of the Golden Order.
- Midra becoming a Frenzied Flame is a terrifying call-back to the players who had achieved The Frenzied Flame Ending where The Tarnished burns the Erdtree after slaying the Elden Beast. The fact that players realize that they unleashed a Person of Mass Destruction in his Manse, trapped inside the boss arena until you had killed him. The cult of the Lord of Frenzied Flame is horrifying that even the Hornsent Tribe, who were responsible for the genocide of Marika's people, attempted to stamp the existence of the mysterious world-ending cult to no avail.
- Midra arguably was a predecessor of Vyke, the Lord of Frenzied Flame in the Lands Between.
- Before that, Midra persuade the random Tarnished to leave his manse, should you proceed further, he calls them out of the Tarnished's foolishness.
- Midra's boss fight is considered to be a terrifyingly awesome boss for the Lord of Cinder derivative, with horror elements ramped up to eleven. There is nothing more terrifying than a single man inside an empty manse within the dark forest, in which said man transformed into a Lord of Frenzied Flame and becoming somehow larger than the Tarnished. Midra also move in marionette motion than a human-like movements, best shown that one of his attacks is faceplanting himself causing a massive explosion after a short levitation, or he can inflict madness status effect in both phases.
- The orchestral boss theme captures the unnaturally ominous Bloodborne-esque aura of the Cosmic Horror Story in Elden Ring. In which, you're fighting a random man, who is a vessel of the Eldritch Sentient Fire, trapped here along with you.
- We're very glad that The self-decapitation cutscene ended with gory discretion shot, to make it more terrifying to imagine.
- Players jokingly renamed Midra, "Peakra", because of being Creepy Awesome. In fan-made memes, Solaire misjudge Midra having found "a sun within him".
