Lyle is a minor character in Better Call Saul. First seen in Season 3, Lyle is an employee of Gus Fring who works as the manager of his local restaurant Los Pollos Hermanos. Though he is completely oblivious to Fring's double life as a drug lord, Lyle is shown to be devoted to his job and very respectful towards his employer in all of his appearances.
He was played by Harrison Thomas.
What makes him an Ensemble Dark Horse[]
- Like many other minor characters from the series, Lyle has built a reputation as a meme among fans of the show who enjoy his bits of screentime despite being next to irrelevant to the main plot.
- He frequently gets compared to SpongeBob SquarePants from the cartoon of the same name due to their status as hard working employees at a fast food restaurant and their determination to please a boss whom they admire (Gus Fring and Mr. Krabs) while also being oblivious to their true nature and unlawful acts to amass wealth.
- He is braver than he looks, showing professionalism and dedication to his boss even in the face of danger by asking him if he really wanted to be left alone with Héctor and his gang (not knowing that Gus himself is a criminal and associated with them).
- This was also taken to the extreme by some fans who have joked and theorized about Lyle being secretly a badass enforcer of Gus who would have probably thrown hands with thugs in order to protect the business.
- He is extremely dedicated to his job and his admiration for Gus is such that he repeatedly cleaned a fryer non-stop the whole night until Gus deemed it acceptable, even though he wasn't directly forced or coerced into doing it.
- The scene where he is cleaning the fryer to Gus' liking is considered to be one of the darkest, most tense and simultaneously hilarious moments of Gus, as it shows his mask of affability slipping for a moment with his criminal persona leaking into his ordinary life (all this fueled by his frustration with Lalo Salamanca). It's easy to sympathize with Lyle through the whole ordeal.
- Fans agree that he is one of the most genuinely likable and down-to-Earth characters in the show, lacking any criminal records or unpleasant behavior.
- The fandom has theorized about his absence and possible fate during the events of Breaking Bad. While it might just be creator's oversight due to his character not being thought of until later, viewers can only imagine how devastated he must have been after Fring's criminal side was exposed.
