“ | Nobody expects much from me. They think that a C-Class won't be much help. I know that better than anyone. I'm not good enough for B-Class I'm weak even I know that much no one has to tell me I have no chance of beating you. I already know that. Even so I must try it's not about winning or losing. It's about me taking you on right here right now. | „ |
~ License-Less Rider's monologue as he fights Deep Sea King |
Satoru, better known for his Hero name License-less Rider, is a supporting protagonist in the webcomic/OVA/Anime series, One Punch Man. He is a top ranked C-Class hero of the Hero Association based in Z-City. Because of his chronic heroism, he is adored by the citizens and any other heroes in spite of being powerless unlike Saitama & Genos.
He is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in the Japanese dub of the anime, and by Robbie Daymond in the English dub.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- In General, he is a parody derivative of a tokusatsu hero, Kamen Rider. Satoru is basically an average biker dude with a bicycle rather than a motorbike. While Kamen Rider are physically, technologically, or mystically superpowered individuals, Satoru is an ordinary guy with a massive willpower, by heroes standards.
- He may not be powerful as Saitama and Genos, but he is dedicated to committ any acts of heroism, such as helping a small boy getting his ballon from the tree. In the following scene, Satoru fights the Paradise Group, led by Hammerhead, to protect the innocent people, only to get beaten unconscious in instant.
- In Deep Sea King Arc, he attempts to fight the titular villain, Deep Sea King. Though he's no match against the monster, he has a monologue that brought citizens to tears (Except for the entitled NEET evacuee who appears after Deep Sea King was killed). Combined with raw willpower and high endurance, he managed to stall Deep Sea King long enough, saving Genos, until Saitama arrives.
- The monologue made the new perception of the Japanese's philosophy of Determination to the Western Fanbase. Unlike any previous Shonen Heroes who usually defeat the arc villains with determination, Satoru / License-less Rider is a determined defeatist, knowing that he's no match against the Deep Sea King, but still have a guts to attempting to land a jab to the monster. This is where the Failure Hero with a Chronic Hero Syndrome comes to play with drama as him being the citizen's hope spot before Saitama eventually arrives.
- After Saitama kills the Deep Sea King, the NEET evacuee shows up to berate the heroes's efforts for losing against the Deep Sea King. It gets so bad that Saitama has to pull a zero-approval gambit to save heroes' reputation, including Satoru, whom he saves in the battle of Deep Sea King. Satoru got a massive adoration by the fanbase after a single ungrateful citizen berates the heroes' efforts, which would include him, known for his deterministic speech earlier. Sometime after, he is grateful to Saitama for saving the heroes' reputation after hours of gruelling battle against Deep Sea King, in Oden shop. Saitama compliments him that in his eyes, Satoru will always be a true hero regardless of the rank.
- In Alien Conquerors Arc, when the A-City is destroyed, Satoru appears to rescue the citizen in a rubble. While the more powerful heroes such as Tatsumaki were fighting the alien invaders. His bike makes a more practically useful situation for saving the lives of survivors.
- In OVA, it's revealed that Saitama and Satoru attended in the same elementary school during childhood, neither both of them aware of this.
- Props to the voice acting who gave the fanbase's most beloved character in the series in Japanese and English dubs during the confrontation against Deep Sea King.
- In Japanese Dub, Yuichi Nakamura is known for being the Japanese dub voice of Captain America (Played by Chris Evans) in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, he had voiced Tatsuya Shiba, Bruno Bucciaratti, and Satoru Gojo.
- In English Dub, Robbie Daymond is known for voicing Peter Parker / Spider Man in Marvel Western Animated Cartoons. He also voiced Mamoru Chiba / Tuxedo Mask, Chai, and Megumi Fushiguro.
- He is an ironic type of Memetic Badass, because of his indomitable willpower, even after the villains curb-stomped him, he still keeps going because of his sheer determination.
