Sir Artorias, alternatively known as Artorias the Abysswalker, is a former unseen character and one of the antagonists in the Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss DLC. He is one of the four Knights of the Anor Londo. He, known of his purity, became one of Gwyn's entrusted warriors to protect Oolacile from the Abyss. He is a friend of Lord's Blade Ciaran, Hawkeye Gough, and Dragonslayer Ornstein. At some point, he also befriended Alvina, the great cat of Darkroot Garden. When the Abyss plagues the land of Oolacile, Artorias, having slain the monsters of the abyss, confronted Manus, Father of The Abyss. However, having no match against the father of the Abyss, He sacrifice himself to be corrupted, creating a magic barrier in order to save his loyal companion, Sif, and becoming the abyssal husk of him when The Chosen Undead encounters him.
He is voiced by Freddie A'Brassard for his growls, and Blake Ritson for his cut dialogues.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- Artorias, known for being Guts derivative created by Fromsoftware, has an animalistic combat stance and being a berserk black knight in general before Slave Knight Gael or Blaidd the Wolf Man.
- Artorias is often being compared with Type Moon's Berserker Lancelot based on his appearance. Additionally, both of them were insane because of their powers.
- Artorias's greatsword has three versions, and still being an iconic weapon that indirectly inspires The Abyss Watchers's fighting style.
- His connection with Sif, his animal companion, made fans prepared to cry because of the tragic fates surrounding them. It's more evident whether you had completed the DLC or not before facing Sif in boss fight, Sif fights the Chosen Undead to protect his master's tomb one last time.
- Several cut dialogues indicate he wanted to forgive his friends and Sif, when he has a few sheds to humanity since he won't be able to return from the abyss alive and would beg the Chosen Undead to kill him.
- His actions indirectly inspire the Abyss Watchers of Farron Keep becoming the Lord(s) of Cinder to drive off the forces of the abyss, only to be corrupted, repeating the history in Dark Souls III.
- Actually, it was planned to give Artorias dialogues. They were even recorded but finally, they were scrapped. It was because creators wanted to make Artorias fully corrupted by Abyss. However, dialogues suggested that he still have remains of humanity in himself.
- According to the several cute dialogues, Artorias is very affable, and warns player about The Abyss and himself who lost control over his actions due to corruption and begs his old friends to forgive him that he has fallen into Abyss. This makes him being easier to sympathize with him
- His boss fight and the somber leitmotif of him.
- His introduction cutscene is similar to Penetrator, the boss from Demon Souls.
