King Harkinian is a major character in the CD-i Legend of Zelda games. He is the ruler of all of Hyrule.
He was voiced by Mark Berry.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- Harkinian is only really important to the story of Wand a Gamelon, where he disappears along with Link, both being kidnapped by Ganon. Outside of that, he only appears in both the opening and ending cutscenes of both games. Despite these factors, Harkinian is one of the more popular characters amongst the CD-i games, overshadowing both Link and Zelda.
- The games as a whole is infamous for its poor writing and cheesy lines. Harkinian's were able to surpass most of those of the other characters in the game.
- One of the most popular phrases spouted by Harkinian is "My Boy", which got turned into the meme "Mai Boi". The line itself, along with the facial expression he makes while saying it, has often been a popular subject of ironic fanart. There was even an entire DeviantArt group that surrounded this.
- Another popular phrase said by him is "I wonder what's for dinner". This has become one of the main defining traits of the King, having a love for eating dinner, despite him not showing much personality elsewhere. This had spawned the popular YouTube Poop DINNER BLASTER in which, as entailed by the name, Harkinian builds a weapon that shoots dinner at people, forcing them to eat it and make them overweight.
- Harkinian has been a popular inclusion in videos, including remixes and YouTube Poops.
- Unlike many Hyrule Kings whom are aloof, distant with their children or even foolish, King Harkinian is humble, a loving father and always personally ready to help others, whilst being active and willing to display mercy even towards his enemies. Several fans even state that Harkinian is the best King of Hyrule in the series.
- Despite Link not being of royal or noble lineage, Harkinian treats him as an equal and lets him live in his castle. Harkinian also dresses modestly. Harkinian also has no problem personally helping people; when informed about Koridai Island's plight, he immediately asks how he can help and when Gamelon is attacked, he instantly tries to help. Harkinian has a good relationship with his daughter, comforting her when she worries about his safety and allowing her to send Link if he doesn't message her in a month.
- Whilst valuing peace and believing it should be strived for, King Harkinian is a warrior like Link and is very physically active, rather than sending his men to help Gamelon from Ganon's forces, he personally travels there himself to fight for the people of Gamelon. Harkinian also knows how to tap into the magic of the Triforce of Courage. The only reason, Harkinian got captured by Ganon was because he was caught surprise when he was betrayed by his ally, Duke Onkled.
- Whilst firm, Harkinian is capable of great mercy, despite Onkled betraying him to Ganon, Harkinian chooses to sentence him to "scrub all the floors in Hyrule", which while humiliating for a rich noble like Duke Onkled, is actually very merciful given most Kings would instantly put those guilty of high treason to death.
