Ian Dietrich is a supporting character from the anime and manga series Attack on Titan. He is a member of the Garrison Regiment and leader of the Elite Squad who lead the operation to retake Trost District.

He was voiced by Yūya Murakami in the original Japanese and by Scott Freeman in the English dub.

What makes him an Ensemble Dark Horse?

• Despite only appearing in the first half of Season 1, he makes an impact as one of the most badass and selfless side characters and is fondly remembered.
• He vouches for Mikasa during Eren's trial and tries to reason with Kitz after Armin's speech.
• He was among the few soldiers to understand the value that Eren Yeager had with his titan transformation and refused to abandon him, despite him having lost control and attacked Mikasa.
• Many fans consider him to be the reason why humanity was able to win the battle of Trost, his quick thinking in calling all forces to draw the titans out of Eren's path led to the wall being sealed and the city being reclaimed.
• He has one of the most heroic deaths in the series, pulling a fellow soldier out of a titan's mouth before being devoured in his place.
  • He also has one of the more gruesome deaths, as the titan devours his whole body barring his head, which gets decapitated.
• He serves as a stark contrast to the unreasonable captain Kitz Woermann, being level-headed, intelligent and selfless, while Kitz is cowardly, paranoid and selfish.
• Due to his relationship with Mikasa, fans came to see him as a sort of mentor and wished that his death had more of an impact on her.
• He is remembered fondly by Armin in universe, who admires his ability to make sacrifices for humanity.
