Homare Nishitani is a supporting character and antagonist from the 2015 prequel beat em' up video game Yakuza 0. He's the patriarch of the Kijin Clan, a subsidiary of the Omi Alliance which is a rival clan to the Tojo Clan.
He was voiced by the late Keiji Fujiwara.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- He is introduced as a hedonistic and wild man who is considered more crazier than Majima in his years as the Mad Dog of Shimano as a way to make up for Majima's lack of his trademark madness in this prequel. Said craziness is what made him memorable from fans despite his short screentime.
- His voice actor, the late Keiji Fujiwara, delivers an incredible performance.
- His two boss fights with Majima are considered from fans to be one of the best fights in Yakuza 0.
- In that same fight, Nishitani has used a fighting style that seems to be a prototype version of the Mad Dog of Shimano style, making him seem like his fighting style inspires Majima's Mad Dog style.
- He is also shown to be smart and honorable as when Majima won their second fight, under the guise that Nishitani gives him information about the Nikkyo Consortium who has recently capture Makoto Makimura, Nishitani does so.
- He sacrifices himself to help Majima escapes, earning the tears and respects of many fans.
- Additionally, he is among the select few men that inspires Majima to create the iconic Mad Dog of Shimano persona that he would employ for most of the series. It is also possible to argue that Nishitani served as the primary inspiration for his Mad Dog persona.
- Overall, despite having a total of 15 minutes of screentime during Yakuza 0 and dying in that same game, fans adore Nishitani due to his craziness that inspires Majima to develop his iconic Mad Dog persona the most, his sacrifice to defend Majima and his two fights which showcase his crazy fighting style that inspires Majima's iconic Mad Dog of Shimano style. He's so popular with fans that he was even ranked #9 in a 2018 poll for the Top 10 most requested characters to be in Yakuza Online.
- On a sidenote, Nishitani has become popular with fans that Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, which takes place 31 years after his death introduces the character of Homare Nishitani III who earned this name due to the Keiji Clan revering him so much even after his death to the point that all future Patriarchs of the Kijin Clan must take up his name.
