Grimm is a main antagonist of the Hollow Knight: The Grimm Troupe DLC. He is a troupe master of the eponymous Grimm Troupe, where The Knight will participate on the ritual to obtain The Grimmchild Charm and will eventually fight Grimm himself. His Dream counterpart, Nightmare King Grimm is fought as the superboss.
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- In spite of his ominous appearance, Grimm is unfailingly polite towards others and being adored by all. He can be shown to be bowing towards The Knight or The Godseeker. On the other hand, Nightmare King Grimm doesn't bow to The Knight when the battle starts.
- For Grimm, bowing before battle is a serious business. Attacking him when he bowing made him shriek like Banshee and doing "Pufferfish" attack.
- Nightmare King Grimm was implied to be his own alter-ego within.
- After you have completed the DLC, depending on player's choice, the Grimm Troupe vanishes without a trace, adding the nightmare fuel question about when it will return.
- Grimm views life-threatening combat as entertaining, and he will give a respectful bow to the Knight should the Knight manage to defeat him in boss fight.
- Grimm's ritual has sense of dread in context of the story. The purpose of his ritual is to achieve immortality through reincarnation by prolong the Nightmare's Heart. However, both child & adult forms must exist in the same time and the Knight must help the child to "kill" the adult to make him achieve immortality by reincarnation. In other words, Grimm's ritual is basically Klingon Promotion mixed with reincarnation from Hinduism.
- Fans adored Grimm's cool vampiric design, taken from Vampire Moths (Calyptra genus), as Team Cherry's answer to Konami's Dracula from Castlevania. The fact that Grimm himself, being the troupe master who is a devoted follower of The Nightmare's Heart further emphasize his ominous and enigmatic nature.
- Grimm also has an ability to use cape wings in combat in reference to Darkstalkers' Demitri Maximoff and Morrigan Aensland.
- Accompanied with his considered awesome boss themes. His boss fight tests your reflex, and Nightmare King Grimm will escalate further into a higher difficulty to fully upgrade The Grimmchild.
- The Nightmare's Heart in the background also serves as the boss' symbolic health bar as you deal damage to the Boss.
Trivia[]
- Troupe Master Grimm, Dung Defender, and The Hollow Knight (Final Boss) are Hollow Knight Bosses that were ensemble dark horse.
