Elizabeth "Darling" Brown is one of the supporting characters in the Lady and the Tramp franchise. As the wife of Jim Dear, she is Lady and Tramp's owner and is the mother of Jim Jr.
In the original animated film, she was voiced by the late Peggy Lee. In the sequel, she was voiced by Barbara Goodson and was portrayed by Kiersey Clemmons in the 2019 live action adaptation of the same name.
What Makes Her an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]
- Even though she isn't one of the main characters and not having a major role, she is well known for her smart, loyal, soft spoken, and optimistic traits in a serious yet romantic movie about an unlikely romantic relationship between two dog protagonists, which makes the film light-hearted by balancing out the serious tones. As a result, she managed to get a solid amount of fanbase as a result of her smart, caring and optimistic traits that impacted the film and her family and pets.
- The part where she got Lady when she’s a Cocker Spaniel puppy as a Christmas present is a direct reference to the time when Walt Disney actually gave his wife Lillian a Cocker Spaniel puppy as a Christmas present.
- She is liked for being a caring and considerate wife to Jim Dear, as she does whatever she can to help Jim reconsider, as shown when she requested Jim to let Lady sleep with them and when she wanted him to adopt Angel, after Tramp bought Scamp home, demonstrating how healthy their relationship is to each other.
- She is also liked for being a loving and caring mother, as shown when she is singing a lullaby to her son in order to calm him down, “La La Lu” and show Lady to her son to make Lady appreciated. Additionally, she actually didn't want to leave Jim Jr and Lady behind while going on vacation, though she kindly inform Lady that they'll return after a short trip to make sure their house, dog and infant are safe, in which they did as promised.
- Speaking of which, most fans appreciate that they return home to release Lady from the basement, which allows her to prove Tramp's innocence to them, causing Aunt Sarah, Trusty and Jock to realize their respective misjudgments, as well as making sure Jim Jr. is safe.
- In the sequel, she looks after Jim Jr while Jim, Tramp and Lady go out to search for Scamp and bring him home and at one point, she hummed to calm her son as he became upset of missing Scamp. When Scamp came home with Tramp, Trusty, Jock and Angel, Darling made Jim Jr. happy by persuading Jim to adopt Angel, as a result of her intelligence and kindness.
- Fans are impressed that she’s one of the smartest Disney Mothers for keeping her family and pets together while having Jim to be reasonable.
- Her elegant and soft spoken performance by Peggy Lee in the original animated film played a role in making her one of the most underrated mothers you don't hear that often. It also makes her one of Lee's memorable performances in her life and career.
- Even Barbara Goodson also did a great job voicing her in the sequel as well by making her sound almost close to Peggy Lee.
- Furthermore, she is also liked for being a good dog owner, as demonstrated when she not only asked Jim to let Lady sleep with them but also adopted Tramp and four puppies without hesitation, as well as persuading Jim to adopt Angel in the sequel, as mentioned above.
- What's more is that she and Jim are the first two characters to be shown on screen and to speak their lines in the first film and in the live action remake.
- To add to that, she is also the first character to speak in the second film.
- Speaking of which, most fans appreciate that her and Jim's faces are often shown in the sequel compared to the original.
- Even if some people like or didn't like the 2019 live action adaptation, several other people like how she and Jim picked up Lady from the pound and actually kicks Aunt Sarah out of their house for her cruel mistreatment towards Lady.
- Unlike most of the characters that have or used to display corrupting factors, fans are also impressed that Darling didn’t display any corrupting factors and stands out to be the most mature out of all the character in the films.
- Overall, her helpful and supportive traits also played a role in making her one of the most underrated and smart Disney Mothers, as well as being one of the reasons why Lady and the Tramp has been praised as one of the best Disney animated films.
Trivia[]
- She is one of the only three parents from a 1950's Disney film to be an Ensemble Dark Horse, with the other two being her husband Jim and King Hubert, as well as being the only one from that category to be a female.
- On top of that, she and Mrs. Potts are the only two Disney EDHs to be mothers.
