“ | God of Wisdom. Look at me. I will utter no prayer, nor will I sing your praises. You and your kind destroyed my home, wrought unfathomable suffering on my compatriots... Yet here I stand before you. You cannot mock me more than fate itself already has. God of Wisdom, I seek not to disavow myself of the sinful blood that flows through my veins. I wish only to beseech you to have pity upon a young and unfortunate soul. My son, Caribert... He was turned into a monster before he had the chance to witness anything beautiful in this world... This is no fate for a child. .... If everything the gods have done was in order to have the impious people of Khaenri'ah bow their heads... Then... I bow to you now. I have given up all I ever stood for... All I ask for is a tiny miracle. For Caribert to see this world once more. Please, God... I beg of you. | „ |
~ Chlothar (as "Eide") demanding the God of Wisdom to answer his prayers to cure his illegitimate son. |
“ | Sinister? Dangerous? I never imagined that you, of all people, would deny the Abyss... How ridiculous! We once believed that you would bring new strength and hope to Khaenri'ah. To us, you were the Abyss... A wondrous mystery far beyond our imagination and comprehension... And the one who controls the Abyss can control everything! We yearned for that future. We looked to you to take us there. But what did you bring us instead? O (Princess/Prince) ... of Khaenri'ah? | „ |
~ Chlothar Alberich addressing the Traveler's Twin, after witnessing The Loom of Fate. |
Chlothar Alberich was a deuteragonist in the open world role-playing game Genshin Impact. He was a nobleman from Khaenri'ah with a lineage of the Alberich Clan who fled from his homeland after the destruction of Khaenri'ah by the Gods because of the people's hubris. Since he was cursed with immortality by the Gods of Celestia, his wife and son were cursed into Hilichurls. At some point, Chlothar's wife died in unknown cause and buried in Sumeru, leaving him with his only illegitimate son, Caribert to protect. At some point, he was tempted by the voice of the mysterious purple entity that he became the founder of The Abyss Order and died in unknown time. He only appears in the Archon Quest Chapter III Act VI: Caribert.
He's voiced by Shinnosuke Ogami in Japanese dub and Andrew Russell in English dub (Who also voiced Joserf and Abyss Herald: Frost Fall in the same game).
What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse? []
- In general, Chlothar was a Khaenri'ah noble and one of the survivors, who fled from his homeland after the destruction of Khaenri'ah by The Seven under the orders of the Gods of Celestia. Unknown to him, he was cursed with Immortality by the Gods and then his wife and son were cursed into Hilichurls, the usual adversary the player character encounters. After the series of being subjected with cruel divine punishments that preventing him to have a happy life, he becomes maddened into misotheism, making him pitiable by the audience.
- Additionally, he's also related to Kaeya's Father due to sharing with the lineage of Alberich Clan, making him somewhat Kaeya's ancestor.
- While donning a purple-colored outfit of Khaenri'ahn noblemen clothing, many players assumed that he was either an Electro Abyss Lector or an Iniquitous Baptist. The purple color in his outfit also marks the character surrounded by mystery.
- His defining character virtue is his genuine love for his family, by protecting Caribert, his illegitimate and only son out of concern from the attacks of people because of their hostility towards the Hilichurls. Unfortunately, his genuine familial love to his son ended up being a flaw that he's easily tempted by the unholy blessings of the Abyss, from The Sinner / The Visionary, Verdfolnir, making him a neutral character fall into a villain after the series of trauma-conga divine punishments. Additionally, Chlothar had marked Caribert with a blue scarf on left wrist to make him distinguishable from the common Hillichurls, and Chlothar was eventually tempted by the powers of the Abyss because he thought Caribert was away from his Chlothar's house.
- At some point, Chlothar asked the Traveler (Sibling) to make a cure for Caribert, in which consisting of Kalpalata Lotus, Sumeru Rose, and a strange red Mushroom. The last ingredient delves into a nightmare fuel that it was grown at the grave of Chlothar's wife, which Chlothar's body was also buried there in the present time.
- The Way that he demands the God of Wisdom to answer his prayer to no avail that he shows of his Misotheistic belief before becoming the Founder of the Abyss Order. Unknown to him, the God of Wisdom (Lesser Lord Kusanali / Buer) was locked inside Sanctuary of Surasthana by the hypocritical & heretical sages of Sumeru Akademiya.
- He reacts the mysterious purple entity in the Unknown Sanctuary under the Chasm with admiration, which makes he's curious about the unholy blessing given from The Sinner. He then uses the unholy blessing of the Abyss to cure his son, which it worked that he awakes from his slumber. However, Caribert then saw a reflection of himself that he was a Hilichurl and ran away from his home and eventually breaking the mask in front of his father and The Traveler's Twin and killed by the powers granted as an unholy blessing from the Abyss given by his father, Chlothar as both Traveler's Twin and Chlothar witnessed the Loom of Fate. By the time he became the founder of the Abyss Order, he had jumped off the slippery slope that he's unable to understand of how dangerous the powers of the Abyss and its unholy blessings.
- His death, which was ambiguous, left the dark legacy of the Abyss Order currently being led by The Traveler's Twin as Dainsleif has stated. Whether he succeeded breaking the curse of immortality or not was pretty much unknown.
- Andrew Russell's performance captures Chlothar's unnerving insanity with mirthless laughter, and also how he demands the God of Wisdom to answer his prayers, with broken ego, maddened into misotheism, and a disturbing expression of admiration towards The Sinner / The Visionary, Verdfolnir.
- After months have passed, the meme that Chlothar Pointing at Dendroculus / Hydroculus broke the internet within the Genshin Impact Guide. The English voice of Chlothar, Andrew Russell took notice the meme that meant to guide the players. Later, he found the original scene of Chlothar pointing The Traveler to get out from his house, before he introduces himself as "Eide" in Russell's playthrough.
