Tragic Enigmatic Sibling

Caleb Wittebane is a posthumous character in the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. He was an orphan from 17th century Connecticut who was the older brother of Philip Wittebane. Caleb came across a witch named Evelyn and fell in love with her. Caleb would go on to enter the Demon Realm, settling on the Boiling Isles with Evelyn and trying to start a family together. However, Philip, who followed them through the portal, was angry to find that Caleb had abandoned their mission, and so he killed him.

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

He is an entirely posthumous character with barely any screentime. He only appeared depicted in Masha's story, some portraits in Belos' memories, and as a ghost who may or may not have been a hallucination. Not once in the show was he shown speaking. When he first appeared in Belos' memories, his name was unknown, and fans simply called him "Wittebro" in the place of any real name.
Despite his minimal characterization, he has a tremendous impact. It's because of him that Philip Wittebane (later Emperor Belos) came to the Boiling Isles in the first place, leading to the whole conflict of the show. He is also the template that Hunter and all of the other Golden Guards were cloned from. On top of that, he is strongly implied to be the ancestor of the Clawthorne family, and therefore of Eda. His relation to Belos and Hunter makes his legacy a major plot point in "Thanks to Them."
Following "Hollow Mind," when his character was first shown (albeit unnamed) in Belos' memories, fans immediately found him fascinating. There was an enigmatic yet tragic story of him falling in love with a witch only to be killed by his brother, and fans began speculating about the exact details of his story. There is tons of fanfiction that speculates about the early life of the Wittebane brothers and how they came to be.
There is an element of Fridge Brilliance to his character. Since the Golden Guards are his clones, and because the Golden Guards repeatedly "betrayed" Belos, fans found an implication that Caleb is such a fundamentally good person that his kind nature carries over to his clones despite Belos' best efforts.
He is a foil to his brother Philip, and somewhat of a mirror character to the main heroine Luz. Philip came to the Boiling Isles with a desire to exterminate the "witches", while both Luz and Caleb came with a desire to understand and make friends with the "witches" since they're people.
