Tis but a scratch.
~ The Black Knight's most famous line in response to his lost arm.
Oh I see. Running away, eh? You yellow bastard! Come back here and take what's coming to you! I'll bite your legs off!
~ The Black Knight's final words before his presumed death.

The Black Knight is a famous minor antagonist in the 1975 iconic classic British comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He is a rogue knight clad in black, as his name suggests, who guards a tiny bridge for unknown reasons, challenging those who pass by to a duel, and then killing them. Although supremely skilled in swordplay, the Black Knight suffers from unchecked overconfidence and a staunch refusal to ever give up.

He was portrayed by the Monty Python member John Cleese.

What Makes Him an Ensemble Dark Horse?[]

  • While he plays a small role in the film and appears only at the beginning, he became one of the most memorable characters, even outweighing Arthur and Knights of the Round Table.
  • His debut scene fighting with an unknown knight was considered badass, and makes him look intimidating.
  • He became one of the funniest characters in the film for following reasons:
    • He constantly refuses to give up even after losing two arms and then two legs, calling them "just a scratch" or "flesh wound".
      • With every lost limb, he becomes much less serious and more annoying to Arthur, and more hilarious to the audience.
    • His humorous dialogue is also memorable.
    • His iconic performance by John Cleese, one of Monty Python's creators.
    • What's even more ironic, his symbol on the armor is a boar, an animal who also refuses to stop even after being severely injured.

Trivia[]

  • The Black Knight and the Killer Rabbit are the known ensemble dark horses from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • After losing one leg, his actor was changed on local blacksmith who actually was legless
